The free bike helmets are provided by Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, Councilman Barry Grodenchik, and Congresswoman Grace Meng, with support from the New York City Department of Transportation.
Bike helmets degrade over time, so they should be replaced periodically and whenever cracks are found. This event not only gives you a free helmet, but also shows you how to fit it to your head, since an improperly worn helmet will not help in a crash. Last year’s Eastern Queens event was highly attended by neighborhood cyclists, but the process was well organized by the NYC DoT to minimize wait time. There is no reason not to get a free helmet and fitting, so come down this Sunday.
We spoke to Assemblywoman Nily Rozic about why this event is so important to our community. She told us,
With the Eastern Queens Greenway in the heart of our neighborhood, bike-riding is a quintessential element of daily life — from commuting to recreation. I’m partnering with Congresswoman Grace Meng, Councilman Barry Grodenchik, and the Department of Transportation to ensure that all riders have access to safety gear including helmets for all. Last year, our event attracted over 1,100 residents and I’m hopeful this year will be as successful.
There is no reason not to get a free helmet and fitting, so come down this Sunday. Bring some friends or make new ones with the hundreds of Eastern Queens cyclists gathering together on Sunday.
