A lot of the work we do is advocating for safe passage for our most vulnerable street users. But we don’t want to just focus on the hard work, let’s make sure our community is having fun. Come for a ride and make some positive friendships.
Cyclists Heard
The next local ride we know of is the monthly music ride, “Cyclists Heard”. That one is the last Friday of every month at 6:30 in the middle of Peck Park (corner of 188th Street, 53rd Avenue, and Underhill Avenue). The only thing better then biking with friends, is biking with friends and great music.
Queens Social Ride
If you’re looking to explore new areas of Queens with a safe group, this ride is for you. Every week Eric plans out an exciting journey, usually with an interesting theme. The ride is slow enough that you can chat as you ride. His Facebook and Instagram show the fun they have. They’ve done over 100 rides and only cancel at the most extreme weather conditions (though we can’t remember the last Sunday they weren’t on the road).
The group leaves from the Unispher in Flushing Meadows Corona Park every Sunday at 9:00 AM. They ride between 15 and 30 miles around 8 to 13 miles per hour (with some nice breaks) so it’s a very easy ride for most cyclists.
Special Rides
Our group organizes special rides for fun events. We’ve done some kid bike rides in the past and some rides with elected officials, and of course the Tour De Flushing.
Last Sunday we had an Icecream Ride, featured in QNS. It was only 4 miles, from Peck Park to Baskin-Robbins. We rode on some of the bike lanes that our group advocated for and won. We also rode in streets where the DoT was going to build bike lanes and the haters in the communty blocked them. But at the end of the day, we had a great time with some cool treats.
We’re planning more rides; maybe we’ll do a Haunted Halloween ride to check out the best neighborhood decorations. Make sure to enter your email address on this page and hit the “Follow” button to hear about it.
If you know of any other local bike rides, or want to start your own, add them to the comments.
